Woodchester beaker, pattern number 1202

Stock Number: 1043

This is what we believe to be Woodchester diamond moulded, Facon de Venise style beaker designed for Whitefriars by Harry Powell and dating originally from approximately 1918, pattern number 1202.   A similar glass, but in blue, can be seen in Lesley Jackson's book, 'Whitefriars Glass, The Art of James Powell & Sons' on page 113 (plate 78).  The glass can also be seen in the online catalogue of Whitefriars Glass from 1931 and Whitefriars Glass from 1938.

The glass appears to be in excellent condition for its age.  This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot commensurate with nearly 100 years of use.  It has a rough pontil mark on the foot.

The glass has a funnel bowl measuring 8.5 cm (3.4 inches) in diameter at the rim.   The bowl is moulded with nipt diamond waies and sits on a slightly wrythen, raised, fluted and folded foot which measures 7.8 cm (3.1 inches) in diameter.  The glass itself is 15.0 cm (6 inches) in height.  There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

It is made from English lead metal.
